AB ISSUE/PROBLEM: Outreach work through minority group's own networks heve
been compantively successful in Western countries. These same efforts as
they focus on their broader community in Japan have, not until today,
been properly evaluated/appreciated. This presentation briefly examines
the impact of OCCUR's activities especially in relation to the gay
community. PROJECT/BACKGROUND: For the past three years OCCUR has
continued to build its efforts in a Safer Sex Campaign which has
involved distribution of condoms, street outreach, AIDS imformation and
counseling, telephone services, as well as coordinating various events
focusing on AIDS, etc. Condoms and brochures are distributed to over 200
gay bars and hotels and a force of about 150 volunteers are directly
involved street outreach targetting gay men. Events focusing on AIDS
have included drama/plays, special performances, song shows, etc.
IMPACT: OCCUR's outreach work continues to receive growing support from
gay bar owners with a response rate of about 60%. It is reported that
55% of the target group have indicated an interest in safer sex
practices, with 30% using comdoms. However, there still remains a
percentage who are indifferent about AIDS. Imformation reported by the
mass media continues to be inadequate in familiarising the gay people
about AIDS issues. OCCUR's telephone data indicates that there is
ignorance/lack of understanding surrounding even the basic AIDS issues.
Those with an understanding complain that there is no opportunity to
discuss the AIDS issue with their partner. LESONS LEARNED: Though there
is a increasing amount of information regarding AIDS being communicated
through the mass media, some of this information is incorrect and very
confusing. Administrated agencies are not nearly as effective in
reaching the community with general information which tends to be
limited and indirect. Therefore, in order to reach the people in the
community who reqire precise, concrete and correct information a greater
support of outreach work is necessary.
